About Kazan

  • 12 Hours train/drive from Moscow city.

  • 1 Hour 30 Mins flight from Moscow city.

  • This is very likely going to be your first stop on your Trans-Siberian Journey.

  • Wealthy city of Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. With a population of 1.2 Million, it is the 6th most populous city in Russia. Also known as the “third capital of Russia”. However, it is still not visited by many tourists yet.

  • A blend of Muslim and Christian cultures, and lots of beaches along the city.

  • See the only surviving Tatar fortress in Russia. Having a Mosque and the Christian Orthodox church in its Kremlin is a prime example of the harmonious settlement of cultures

What to eat in Kazan?

  • Kazan has a pastry tradition. Some are meaty and some are honey sweet. Check them out in your trip.

  • Try Chak Chak, a local Tatar sweet.

  • Kazan has about 5 main places to visit, out of which 3 are within the Kazan Kremlin.

1. Soviet Lifestyle Museum

  • In this small museum, there’s so much stuff from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. So if you are interested to know what life was like during Communism, you will get to see the remains of communism here.

2. Bauman Street

  • Take a stroll down Bauman Street - A pleasant stroll with plenty of Souvenir shops, and some cafes along the way and leads right to the Kazan Kremlin

  • Take a walk around the Kremlin which runs along the Kremlin side with lots of views, restaurants, Cafes and neches to enjoy the view.

  • 5 mins walk from Kul Sharif Mosque.

  • Other buildings around

    • Annunciation Cathedral

    • Söyembikä Tower - Named after a Queen who supposedly committed suicide there, however she died naturally elsewhere. No one knows who built this, why it was built and why it is slightly leaning.

5. Temple of All Religions

  • Not a functioning temple. Kind of like an art project by a local philanthropist who wanted to represent all the 16 religions of the past and present.

  • Once it is finished, it will have 16 domes, each representing a religion.

  • Opening hours: 10 AM to 8 PM.

  • Only this attraction is a bit away from the Kazan Kremlin - about 20 min drive from Soviet Lifestyle Museum.
