Google Algorithm Exposed - Reverse engineering the Google algorithm and SEO with all claims backed by real examples - A Case Study

This is what every SEO would want to know. What is the Google Algorithm and how it exactly decides the order of websites in the search results for a given keyword. No matter how smart and advanced the Machine Learning and NLP technologies become, there is always room for error - because in the end of the day, it is still a machine and a code that decides your fate in Google rankings. Apart from creating high quality content, we cannot overlook the fact that we are still dealing with a code and (maybe) trying to understand this code will help us in making not only our readers, but the machine’s happy too.

I will attempt to decode and reverse engineer the Google algorithm and share my insights with you. Each claim will always be accompanied with proof. Bookmark this page as I wish to keep updating this post with time and as I find more claims backed up by real research and examples.

Search Intent Algorithm

Google is trying to understand the intent of keywords typed into Google for quite some time and have had some major leaps in this arena. We know its “machine learning” but what exactly is the training data of Google to understand the search intent?

When you type a keyword on Google, and the results come up - you may have noticed that Google bolds the text that exactly matches the keywords in the meta description of each result. Google also bolds the words that are synonyms to the typed keyword. This gives you a basic idea of how Google understands your target keywords in terms of language at any given day.

My claim is that Google’s training data to understand the search intent does not just come from exact matches and synonyms of the words in the keyword phrase, but also from the Knowledge Panel data (if it exists for the said keyword)

Look at the following search result and the information provided by Google. See what Google bolds in the meta description of the results.

How can we benefit from this understanding? We should closely watch the meta descriptions and watch out how “Google” is actually understanding the keyword and matching the webpage’s contents.

What will be the future Google updates

In order to understand the direction in which Google is going, you need to understand the past and how we reached here today.

Check out this page for the history of algorithm changes since the year 2000 up until today. I have bookmarked this page and it's really helpful to stay updated with the SEO so i recommend you bookmark that page as well. Also, Bookmark this article as this is not the end of this article; i will keep updating and adding new confirmed decoding as i progress with my research.

Conclusion

The only way to try to understand how Google algorithm works is by paying attention to the kind of results it shows, the meta, the titles, the alt’s in the images to assess how accurately Google is attempting to understand the pages and how its ranking. Any claim to a decoded algorithm of Google cannot be acceptable with just a claim - it has to be backed up with proof and examples. And that is exactly what this article and ReadBeach is all about.

What do you think of my understanding and study? Do you also agree with points mentioned in the article? Also, please share your thoughts if you have something interesting that you have noticed that exposes how the Google algorithm works.
